RE: We’ve noticed that in most restaurants, a 10% service charge is included in the bill. Is it proper to leave a tip on top of this?
Most Gringos do tip above this, although I don’t think that many Ticos do. Â The 10% service charge is split with other restaurant staff (as is true with server tips in the USA), so for good service, a little additional for the server is nice. Â If I receive decent service, I usually tip an additional 5% (or half of the service charge) for a net 15% tip. Â I add 10% only for superb service (equivalent to top notch USA style service). Â Excessive tipping can be insulting to other Tico guests in the restaurant since they cannot afford to tip like Gringos.
