If you avoid the tourist traps like escazu hiredia and the beaches and own your own house yes you can live very well on $2000.
I live in a realy nice area just between paraiso and cachi outside cartago .
i own my house and i pay about $150 a month in bills that includes water electric property tax, internet phone, and sky sat tv..
i shop at the farmers market on saturday mornings thats 5 mins drive away and has all the best fresh produce and more!!!
i buy meat from the butcher in bulk and i freeze it in a chest freezer (eg half a big pig costs me about $150)as soon as you live in an area where theres expats the prices do go up.aswell as property prices so be careful
if you have any more questions please ask

Depends on where and how you live. Want to live in the same American lifestyle you will probably pay more. Ditch the car and take bus or taxi. Walk a lot . Buy at farmers markets and where locals shop. Cut back on meat consumption. Live where no air conditioning is needed. Just a few suggestions—-but these ideas do work.

dazlee - Who do you use for internet phone and sky sat tv? Rates seem to vary greatly – I am on the Nicoya. Cable Tica is not available by me, nor Kolbi. thank you

You most certainly can. Expect to rent in a small town, not have a car, but really live. It can be done easily but you need to live like a local. Local food, the farmers market.
