How’s the driving in Costa Rica?

I heard that Ticos drive like maniacs. Is it true?

yes, they are very rude and aggressive. You will have to learn to be the same.

I haven’t seen the majority as rude.  In fact, I have seen the opposite in most cases.  People let you in when there are long lines and are pretty friendly in general. There are exceptions of course, but name a country where there aren’t.

My experience is that there are good drivers and maniac drivers in every country and US state. In CR I find them sane and just like other places.

Having said that you have to fall into a central America mentality and slow down. If you are always in a great hurry you could find yourself frustrated a lot. But then if you are always in a hurry, Costa Rica may not appeal to you.

Some drive very slowly and some very fast – not many in between!  A few are very rude, but not all.  Most roads outside of San Jose are 2-lane, so you need to be skilled at passing.

the roads are full of pot holes and missing drain covers so you need to be carefull in town its a nightmare at peek times with jams and tempers can tend to flare but once you get outside san jose the drivers are ok but you do need to be carefull as the roads can be deadly !! overall tico drivers are chilled out

City driving is super stressful. Expensive. Parking and gas add to that. Gas over $6/gallon. Insurance is a must. Driving in smaller towns is nice. Watch your speed. Roads are in TERRIBLE repair. Potholes that can damage your car in an instant.

It is like playing Mario Kart.  Hazards everywhere, roads are not straight or wide, pedestrians, you have to be very safe especially after dark.
