Theft and other “crimes of opportunity” are very common in CR.  Always keep an eye on your possessions when away from home and do not leave valuables visible in your locked car.  If you live in a tourist area, you should have a guard at night and/or when away from home.

Violent crimes are less frequent outside of San Jose but do occur.  I generally feel safe, but avoid walking alone later at night.  Don’t flaunt that you have money by what you wear or how you spend.

You don’t have to be constantly be in fear, but you do need to remain aware of risks and plan accordingly.
