We’ve noticed that in most restaurants, a 10% service charge is included in the bill. Is it proper to leave a tip on top of this?

Most Gringos do tip above this, although I don’t think that many Ticos do.  The 10% service charge is split with other restaurant staff (as is true with server tips in the USA), so for good service, a little additional for the server is nice.   If I receive decent service, I usually tip an additional 5% (or half of the service charge) for a net 15% tip.  I add 10% only for superb service (equivalent to top notch USA style service).  Excessive tipping can be insulting to other Tico guests in the restaurant since they cannot afford to tip like Gringos.

Ticos do NOT tip above the service charge!
Extra only for good service. It’s not that common.
