Where is the cheapest place to buy groceries in Langosta/Tamarindo?
Within Tamarindo, I have found Super Compro to have the best prices on groceries.  The “2001” super market tends to be higher priced, but they do carry a number of items that are hard to find elsewhere.  AutoMercado is generally more expensive, but some of their sales provide good prices, and they have the best selection of food.  You can also drive up the road towards Santa Rosa to Mega Super for reasonable prices and a good size store.  (I used to track prices and found that each store had good prices on some items but none always had the best price).
I need to alter my previous response – I recommend against shopping at Mega Super. Â We just decided to pick up several items there. Â I then compared prices with AutoMercado, and Mega Super had much higher prices on some items. Â Also, we bought one head of cauliflower but the receipt shows that we were charged for two. Â I can’t trust their pricing.
Mega Super definitely has the best deals but you do have to know about the pricing at other stores. And their produce is not always the freshest. Mega Super has the highest prices on Bioland products which are cheapest, in my experience, at Auto Mercado. 2001 has the best price and quality on meat. The Super Compro in Tamarindo expended and yet reduced their variety I hardly shop there anymore.
AutoMercado on Wednesday has sales on a lot of their fruit, veggies, meats and more! Also, if you can make it to the Saturday market produce is great and cheap. Also in Villareal theres a market on Monday and Fridays – Cheap veggies and fruit!
Mega Super is pretty cheap if you can take a taxi out there – its usually 2,000 ($4) one way from Tamarindo or take the local bus!
